Originally from Austin, Texas, and currently based in Montreal, Quebec, Isabella Cuminato is an emerging mezzo-soprano praised for her “deep timbre” (Alexandre Villemaire) and a dedicated chorister who is passionate about engaging in Canada’s vibrant choral music scene.
Isabella is a recent graduate from the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, where she was the recipient of various awards such as the E. Gordon Cleather Scholarship and the Robert N.C. Tennant Voice Award. She obtained her Bachelor of Music with a Major in Voice Performance under the tutelage of Prof. Joanne Kolomyjec, and she also received a Minor in Choral Conducting having studied under Dr. Jean-Sébastien Vallée.
Most recently, Isabella was a vocal resident in the Canadian Vocal Arts Institute for their summer 2024 season, where she performed the role of “Contralto” in Tom Johnson’s Four Note Opera. Her past opera credits include Zweite Dame in Die Zauberflöte and chorus roles in Die Fledermaus and La Traviata. Isabella is currently looking forward to performing as the Secretary in the Halifax Summer Opera Festival’s 2025 production of The Consul.
Isabella is also a keen concert soloist, having performed as the alto soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Orchestre de la Francophonie and as the mezzo-soprano soloist in the Schulich School of Music’s production of MisaTango (Misa a Buenos Aires), a six-movement mass by Martín Palmeri for choir, mezzo-soprano soloist, and instrumental ensemble.
With a dedication for repertoire diversity and versatility, Isabella has immersed herself in the study of an array of musical styles, including but not limited to 19th and 20th century chamber music, baroque to contemporary repertoire, and seven languages of art song. Most recently, she completed a 5-month period of independent study in Argentina in closer proximity to catalogues of Argentinian art song, and she looks forward to sharing these works as well as others from South America.
Isabella enjoys singing with several professional choirs in Montreal, including but not limited to the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal, CREO Vocal Ensemble, Les Rugissants, and with various churches as a hired substitute singer. She has also had the opportunity to perform with the National Youth Choir of Canada in their latest tour throughout Ontario and at the Choral Canada conference in May 2022.
